Julie Dore, leader of the council, said: "Your communities need you and I have been amazed at how communities have come together to support each other at this time. Through your eyes and ears and local intelligence, we have been made aware of those who most need support across our city.

"If you know of anyone who needs support, do not risk thinking someone else will make that phone call on their behalf. We are here for you, and will do everything we can to support those who need it.

"I am incredibly proud of how Sheffield has responded to this outbreak and continues to adapt to the changing situation. We’ve seen some amazing examples of community spirit and I want everyone to know that even if you’re self-isolating, you are not alone in this city."

A big network of volunteers, public sector organisations and local councillors will be on hand to help with any needs that arise.

Coun Dore said: "For example, my mum is one of those in the at risk category…myself and my sister take care of her at the moment but if we have to isolate then my mum would need to be supported."

Already many have offered aid to one another through acts such as posting notes through neighbours’ letter boxes to say they can pick up essentials and the council now hopes this new network will bring all existing and new support together in one place.

Anyone wanting to volunteer is being directed to Sheffield Voluntary Action group who are helping to coordinate responses.

The council is also working with the police and those involved to prevent exploitation of the scheme and ensure people are confident in the help they receive.

The helpline is open from 8.45am to 4.45pm Monday to Friday.
