With sunny and warm weather forecast for the region this weekend, concerns have been raised that some might be tempted to ignore the strict social distancing rules laid down by the Government.

However, Greg Fell, the city’s director of public health, urged people to continue following the advice in order to ‘save lives and protect those we love’.

He said: “As we all look forward to a sunny and warm weekend, it’s more important than ever that we all adhere to the social distancing guidelines in place.

“Yes, it’s important to get some fresh air, but this needs to be done sensibly, in your garden or during your daily exercise.

“You can exercise outdoors once a day, such as going for a run or a walk. Please do not travel, stay local and keep to social distancing guidelines, staying two metres away from people you don’t live with.

“Now is not the time to have a barbecue with your friends and family. I know it can be tempting to make the most of the good weather by sunbathing in the park or getting out into the Peak District, but we all need to follow the Government guidance and stay at home to save lives.

"I know it's hard, but we are asking everyone for their continued support in keeping to these guidelines. This will help to save lives and protect those we love."

Since the coronavirus outbreak began, 31 people in Sheffield have died from the disease, while more than 700 have been infected.

Across the country, more than 3,500 people have died and almost 40,000 have been infected.

Those who have symptoms of the disease – a high temperature or a new, persistent cough – are being asked to self-isolate for a period of 14 days at home with their families.

Those who are symptom free should only leave the house for essential supplies, daily exercise or for any medical need.
