Earlier this month officers had to disperse large gatherings of people, including some who were watching a DJ performing at the park.

Police report there has since been a marked improvement in the use of the space, however some residents are still concerned, with gatherings reported as recently as Thursday.

Sergeant Simon Kirkham, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “We received a small number of calls concerned about a repeat of large numbers gathering and breaching Covid rules.

"Indeed Bolehills was getting busy but Walkley Team officers attending reported much more compliance in terms of Covid safety and it was a different situation to the week before with groups spaced and no issues of note regarding litter.

"Council warden colleagues have been patrolling this week with colleagues from other teams.

"Officers this evening took time to speak to people and its not hard to understand why the area is so popular with sunsets like tonight.

"Better days are around the corner and the time will come when we can all enjoy Bolehills without restriction.

"[We] just need to keep each other safe in the meantime. Credit where credit is due. Thank you to the majority that were compliant and took time to speak with my officers this evening. Stay safe. Keep the faith. Better days soon.”

One Crookes resident raised concern about the repeated gatherings.

They said: “I am aware it is certainly a challenging time to be at University and can understand the frustration students have with the current Covid situation. We're all looking forward to the end of lockdown and a return to normality.

“However, on numerous occasions over the past few weeks. Including at 6PM Thursday 25th March, they have been gathering on mass in the Bolehills area of crookes, partying, playing loud music, smoking cannabis and lighting BBQs.

"They are are causing problems for local residents as well as swamping the high street. There were approximately 70 to 100 gathered [on March 25]. This wouldn't be acceptable regardless of Covid. It's a a public space for the general public to enjoy. Which of course includes students but not in this way.

“I am aware the police had some CCTV installed and this resolved the issue. The CCTV has now gone and the students have returned. Unfortunately the general behaviour of certain students has deteriorated over the last few months.

“It would be appreciated if students could provide space for others and be considerate to local residents.”
