Over £2,000 has been raised to help a Sheffield animal sanctuary which was forced to close amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Thornberry Animal Sanctuary – which rescues and rehomes vulnerable animals in South Yorkshire and North Nottinghamshire – made a desperate plea last week for donations to help fund vet bills, animal care, food, and more.

The team made the plea just two weeks after the centre was forced to close due to the ongoing outbreak of Covid-19, which has been a “hard hit” to its finances.

All funds raised will go directly towards helping care for the animals over the coming month.

A statement said: “We have lost income from our shops, cafe, online sales, bookshop, bucket donations, events and supporters events.

“We face critical times ahead but we will continue to provide a sanctuary and first-rate care for the vulnerable animals that need us. That will always be our aim. Our work does not stop and we still need to find the funds for vet bills, animal care, food and more.

Over 130 people have donated so far, with the funds totalling £2,310 as of April 6.

One animal lover said: “Sent you a donation to enable you to continue the valuable work you do looking after fur babies until they find their own forever parents.”

Another added: “Donated. Thanks for continuing to do amazing work.”

Thornberry Animal Sanctuary those who donated. It said: “An amazing response as always. Where would we be without our amazing supporters.”
