No new Covid-19 hospital deaths in Sheffield for a further day, figures show

There have been no new deaths among patients with Covid-19 at Sheffield’s hospitals for a further day – suggesting the city's rate of fatalities linked to the pandemic virus is slowing.

The latest figures from the NHS issued this afternoon show that the number of deaths connected to Covid at Sheffield’s hospitals still stands at 894.

These are people who have died in the city’s hospitals and either tested positive for Covid-19, or where no positive test result was received but the virus was mentioned on their death certificate.

Nationally, the Government said a further 158 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Saturday, bringing the UK total to 124,419.

The Government also said that, as of 9am on Saturday, there had been a further 6,040 lab-confirmed cases in the UK, bringing the total to 4,213,343.

Deaths from coronavirus have fallen by 41 per cent in a week, while hospital admissions have seen their fastest ever fall, the Health Secretary said on Friday.

Matt Hancock painted a positive picture regarding the state of coronavirus infections in England in a press conference, with the average number of cases – 6,685 per day – the lowest since late September.

He said there were still 12,136 people in UK hospitals with Covid-19, which was ‘too high’, but the seven-day average for the number of new admissions to hospital was 900 - ‘the lowest since October’.

More than a million people in the UK have received both doses of a Covid-19 vaccine, while almost 21.8 million people have had one dose.
