New coronavirus deaths at Sheffield care homes surpass those at hospitals

More people are now dying with coronavirus at care homes in Sheffield than at hospitals in the city, according to the latest figures.

During the week ending April 24, data from the Office for National Statistics shows 38 people with COVID-19 died at care homes in the city, compared with 32 at hospitals and three elsewhere in the community.

The previous week, 58 coronavirus deaths were recorded at the city's care homes, 44 in hospitals and one elsewhere.

Up to the week ending April 10, 30 people with COVID-19 had died at care homes in the city, while there had been 71 deaths in hospitals and one elsewhere.

In total, up to April 24, according to the ONS, 126 people had died in care homes across Sheffield while 147 had died in the city's hospital and five had died elsewhere.

The weekly figures from the ONS include all deaths from COVID-19, whereas the daily updates from NHS England only include those at hospitals. There are likely to be some deaths before April 24 which have yet to be included in the ONS figures.

In Rotherham, 62 people with COVID-19 had died in care homes up to April 24, according to ONS figures. In Barnsley, there had been 29 deaths and in Doncaster, 12 people had died with the disease.

As of Tuesday, May 5, at 5pm, 222 people had died with coronavirus at hospitals in Sheffield, and there had been 120 hospital deaths in Rotherham, 92 in Barnsley and 110 in Doncaster, according to the latest figures from NHS England.
