With local lockdowns now a possibility for places where coronavirus appears to be spreading at an increased rate it is useful to know which parts of the country have seen increased new cases in recent weeks.

Leicester is the first place to be affected by a local lockdown, and many businesses including bars, restaurants and hair dressers, will have to remain closed for a further two weeks beyond the July 4 reopening date for the rest of the country.

New figures published Public Health England give the most complete insight into the rates at which new Covid-19 cases are being confirmed in each part of the country, broken down by local authority.

The list shows the number of new cases of coronavirus per 100,000 people in each local authority across England.

The figures are based on tests that have been carried out in both laboratories, which are referred to as ‘pillar 1’ of the Government’s testing programme, and in the wider community, known as ‘pillar 2’.

As the daily updates released by the Department for Health only focus on pillar 1, the following list provides the most accurate depiction of rates of infection in different parts of England.
