More than 120 people have died from coronavirus in Sheffield care homes, new figures reveal

There have been 123 lives lost to Covid-19 in care homes across Sheffield, according to figures provided by the Care Quality Commission.

A total of 123 coronavirus deaths have been reported by care providers in Sheffield to the Care Quality Commission (CQC) – the Office for National Statistics has revealed.

The deaths have taken place in Sheffield care homes between April 10 and May 1, according to the data which accounts for every instance care providers informed the CQC of a coronavirus death in their facilities.

Earlier today, NHS England confirmed that 221 people have died in the city’s hopsitals, bringing the total number of people to die in Sheffield hospitals and care homes to 345.

The figures, which were released today (Tuesday, May 5) have shown there have been 216 Covid-19 related care home deaths across South Yorkshire in the same period.

Sheffield has the highest number of coronavirus care home deaths in the region, while Rotherham has a total of 54 people who are confirmed to have died from the disease while in care homes.

Care providers in Barnsley have reported that 28 lives have been lost to the disease and in Doncaster, 11 people are confirmed to have died from coronavirus while in care homes.

Across England, 6,391 coronavirus deaths were reported by care home providers in to the CQC.

It comes after 221 hospital patients in Sheffield are confirmed to have died after contracting Covid-19 – an increase of three since yesterday’s NHS England figures were released.

In Rotherham, there have been 119 total conroanvirus deaths and 107 confirmed deaths in Doncaster.

A total of 92 lives have been lost in Barnsley.

The current death toll of hospital patients who have died from coronavirus in England now stands at 21,750.
