It found that 39.89 per cent of Star readers believed Mr Johnson and his colleagues have handled the crisis ‘not at all well’, while 16.28 per cent replied with ‘not very well’.

During this time the story about the PM’s advisor Dominic Cummings taking a trip to Durham broke in the newspapers and has dominated the news agenda since.

In recent weeks the messaging around the crisis has diverged across the UK.

When asked how clear they thought the UK Government’s slogan of ‘Stay alert, control the virus, save lives was, a majority of Star readers (62.97 per cent) answered either ‘not very clear’ or ‘not at all clear’.

Nationally, the same question produced a similar result with 62 per cent of respondents answering either ‘not very clear’ or ‘not at all clear’.

Almost 12,000 people completed the survey, with 6,816 respondents in England, 3,454 in Scotland and 1,018 in Northern Ireland.

The survey ran from Friday May 22 to yesterday (Tuesday May 26).
