Majority of Sheffield parents not comfortable with sending their kids back to school

The majority of parents in Sheffield say they are not comfortable with sending their children back to school, according to a new reader survey about the coronavirus lockdown.

Almost 12,000 people took part in the survey, carried out by The Star and JPIMedia titles across the UK over the weekend.

It asked Star readers a series of questions about the lockdown and how the different administrations have responded to it.

The survey found that just 18.32 per cent of Star readers would be comfortable for their children to return to the classroom, with 28.08 per cent ‘not at all comfortable’ – despite Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s plans to reopen schools in England from next week.

In total across the country, just 22 per cent would be comfortable sending their kids back to school, with 56 per saying they were ‘not at all comfortable’ with the idea.

In relation to doing leisure activities, Star readers (46.58 per cent) said they would feel comfortable visiting popular destinations such as beaches, parks and beauty spots, 35.10 per cent would be comfortable visiting pubs or bars with outdoor areas, 27.57 per cent would feel comfortable eating in restaurants or cafes and just 14.55 per cent would feel comfortable taking flights to European holiday destinations

In comparison, 53 per cent of readers nationally said they would feel comfortable visiting popular destinations such as beaches, parks and beauty spots, 39 per cent would feel comfortable going back to pubs or bars with outdoor areas, 32 per cent would feel comfortable eating in restaurants or cafes, and 18 per cent would feel comfortable taking flights to European holiday destinations.

- Almost 12,000 people completed the survey, with 6,816 respondents in England, 3,454 in Scotland and 1,018 in Northern Ireland.

The survey ran from Friday May 22 to yesterday (Tuesday May 26).
