Latest Covid-19 rates for every part of South Yorkshire revealed, with THREE areas in top 20 nationally

The disturbing news comes in the latest update of the rolling seven-day rate of new cases of coronavirus for every local authority area in England, published on Wednesday afternoon.

Sheffield has had 2,681 new cases in the seven days up to October 24, a rate of 458.4 per 100,000, which is the 23rd highest in England. That’s up from 2,464 new cases and a rate of 421.3 for the previous week.

Barnsley was 10th in the national list with 1,347 new cases and a rate of 545.6 – up from 1,058 cases in the seven days to October 17, which was a rate of 428.6 cases per 100,000.

There was a big jump of cases in Doncaster, with 1,656 new cases in the latest week and the rate rising from 326.4 to 531.0, which is the 12th highest in England.

Rotherham has a rate of 499.2, which is up from 377.9 the previous week and is the 16th highest in England, with 1,325 cases in the latest week.

The figures, for the seven days to October 24, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Blackburn with Darwen continues to have the highest rate in England, with 1,160 new cases recorded in the seven days to October 24 – the equivalent of 774.9 cases per 100,000 people.

This is up from 559.8 cases per 100,000 in the seven days to October 17.

Oldham has the second highest rate, up from 449.6 to 669.3, with 1,587 new cases, and Rossendale is in third place.

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency and is based on Public Health England data published on October 28 on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.
