The latest coronavirus rates in Sheffield and South Yorkshire, as cases in one area rise by a third

The coronavirus infection rate has risen in every part of South Yorkshire, with new cases shooting up by a third in one area.

The latest figures, published today, Monday, January 4, show that Sheffield’s weekly infection rate is now 225.7 new cases per 100,000 people – up from 176.5 the previous week.

The sharpest rise was in Barnsley, where the weekly rate increased from 203.3 to 271.0, while in Rotherham the rate rose from 219.3 to 266.4, and in Doncaster it increased from 229.9 to 286.0.

Infection rates across South Yorkshire, which is currently subject to Tier 3 restrictions, remain among the lowest in England.

The latest rates have been calculated using Public Health England’s figures for the seven days to December 31, with data for the most recent four days excluded as it is less reliable.

The London borough of Barking and Dagenham has England’s highest weekly infection rate, with 1476.2 new cases confirmed per 100,000 people.
