The latest coronavirus infection rates in South Yorkshire, as cases rise in all but one area

The Government confirmed yesterday that South Yorkshire would remain under the highest Tier 3 restrictions, which now apply across most of England, despite the number of new cases having fallen since the national lockdown ended.

The latest statistics from Public Health England show that the weekly infection rate is now rising in Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham, with only Doncaster recording a slight fall.

In Sheffield, another 888 people tested positive for coronavirus during the seven days to December 13 – the latest date for which reliable figures are available – giving a weekly rate of 151.8 new cases per 100,000 people.

That’s up from a rate of 134.9 during the previous week.

In Rotherham, the weekly rate rose from 190.6 to 236.6, while in Barnsley, it was up from 130.8 to 162.4.

In Doncaster, however, the rate fell slightly from 206.8 to 197.8, with 617 new cases being confirmed during the latest week.

Across England, more than four fifths of areas have seen a rise in the number of new cases.

Medway in Kent has the highest rate nationally, with 772.2 new cases per 100,000 people recorded there.

It is one of 18 areas across England which now have a weekly rate of more than 500.

The lowest rate is in the Isle of Wight, where just 30 new cases were confirmed during the latest week – giving a rate of 21.2.
