Just four Covid-19 patients in Yorkshire and the north east now on ventilators

There are just four Covid-19 patients now on ventilation at hospitals across Yorkshire and the north east – down from more than 300 at the peak of the pandemic.

The number of coronavirus patients at hospitals in the region has also fallen considerably to 108, with three being admitted on Monday, August 10, compared with a high of 507 daily admissions on March 31.

On April 11, 302 people across the area were in mechanical ventilation beds, but that number has since fallen steadily, dropping below 100 in late May and to 50 by mid June.

Since the pandemic began, 16,814 patients with Covid-19 in total have been admitted to hospitals across Yorkshire and the north east, according to the latest Government statistics.

Of those, 4,859 were aged 18-64, giving a rate of 94.3 admissions per 100,000 population for that age group; 7,653 were aged 65-84, a rate of 534.8 per 100,000; and 4,055 were 85 or older, a rate of 1,971.2, or nearly one in 50.

Across the UK, a total of 132,329 Covid-19 patients have now been admitted to hospitals since the pandemic began, with 1,001 still in hospital and 70 on ventilation.

In Sheffield, 103 people tested positive in the week ending on Monday, August 10, with 17 confirmed cases during that period in Doncaster, 33 in Rotherham and 36 in Barnsley.

Across the UK, there were 77 Covid-19 deaths reported yesterday, Wednesday, August 12, taking the toll to 46,706.
