Gyms indoor leisure centres and indoor swimming pools have reopened today after they were given the go-ahead to open their facilities under stage two of the roadmap plan out of lockdown.

During the national lockdown across England, there has been a huge focus from gym-goers and owners about the mental health aspect of training at the gym, with many asking the government to prioritise the opening of fitness facilities to stop the nation's physical and mental health from deteriorating.

Andrew Gunn said: “Back at @VirginActiveUK Sheffield this morning. Still not a fan of the 6 am alarm. Can't believe how busy it was - good to see so many keen to get back in shape.”

Robert Riley, owner of Riley’s fitness and boxing gym, said: “It’s been a slow start but it is starting to pick up a bit, that’s because kids are off school until next week. “It’s going to take some time, but it is good to be back. We’re just so hopeful about the future.”

Gail Harrison, who operates Mr D’z gym with her partner Ryan Denton, said: “It’s been amazing seeing people’s faces again just so happy to be back at the gym training and doing something for themselves, which is making them feel positive about life again.

“The members have been overwhelmed, and some have been very emotional. We’re just glad to be back helping people to feel good about themselves; most feel it has been too long this time since they have picked up a weight.

“A lot have expressed how this lockdown has made them feel like they are losing their mind. We’ve been giving them the encouragement and support to focus on the future, leave the past behind them and work towards a bigger and brighter year and make the most out of being allowed to get back to some kind of normality.

“Just a great day for us all.”
