How Sheffield city centre looked on the day Tier 3 ‘very high’ lockdown was confirmed

Sheffield has been placed into Tier 3 on the Government’s coronavirus alert system, meaning the tightest restrictions will be imposed on the city.

The new rules, aimed at slowing the spread of coronavirus, will come into effect from midnight on Friday. While some businesses – including pubs and bars not serving “substantial meals” – will be forced to close, shops and shopping centres can remain open.

This was the scene in Sheffield city centre after the news was announced.

Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government Robert Jenrick said the restrictions on South Yorkshire will be reviewed in 28 days.
