How the coronavirus death toll in Sheffield has grown day by day

The first death was recorded on March 17 and by the end of March, 27 patients had died at hospitals in the city.

The number of deaths rose sharply after that, passing 100 on April 11, and by mid-April COVID-19 had claimed 130 lives.

The city’s death toll passed 200 on April 29 but since April 25, when 10 people died, the death rate appears to have slowed.

As of 5pm on Tuesday, May 5, the latest date for which figures have been published by NHS England, 220 hospital patients being cared for by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and another two with Sheffield Health and Social Care Trust have died.

The figures are listed by the date people died, not the dates their deaths were announced. The numbers for the last few days could change as deaths sometimes take a few days to be included in the statistics.

Deaths at care homes and elsewhere in the community are not included. These are published separately by the Office for National Statistics, based on death certificates, and take longer to be announced.
