South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue used social media to warn the public of the dangers of using the lanterns as tributes or in support of amazing carers.

It comes as people across the UK prepare to ‘clap for carers’ again this Thursday at 8pm – a weekly movement which has seen millions of people join in unison on their doorsteps to salute those who are working on the frontline in the fight against the coronavirus.

Posting on social media, SYFR said: “We've heard that people are being asked to buy sky lanterns and set them off, in support of our amazing carers.

“PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS! These lanterns could cause a significant fire. A better, safer way to show your support is to simply stay at home!”
