Family of butcher who recovered from intensive care thank customers in Sheffield

Her dad Michael became seriously ill at the start of the coronavirus lockdown, just as the family's butchers' shop became overwhelmed with orders and deliveries for customers self-isolating.

Tara took the difficult decision to keep the shop open - and now, with Michael fighting fit again, she has thanked customers for their support.

Tara and Michael have run Bradway Meats on Twentywell Lane since 2014 with colleague Scott Storey.

Michael, aged 61, had suffered with a heart condition and became ill just as the coronavirus crisis was starting.

Tara said: “Dad fell very poorly and was rushed into hospital at the start of all this.

“The following day, the doctor called and said they had to put him on life support.

“At the same time we were getting orders from people self isolating, so I had to decide what to do and I thought we should stay open.

“The timing was unfortunate, as I couldn't visit my dad in hospital, so it was a really tough couple of weeks.

“It was touch and go for the first 48 hours, but he's a tough cookie and he's made an absolutely fantastic recovery.

“He's back home, but isn't working yet, although he pops into the shop for 10 minutes to see people.”

Tara and Scott ran the shop while volunteer drivers Adam Melia and Pete Dungworth stepped in to make the deliveries.

Tara said: “We wouldn't have been able to do the deliveries without the drivers, we're so grateful to them.

“We're offering free deliveries, but customers can come to the shop - we can't allow them inside so we ask them to order in advance.

“We give them a time and leave their shopping on the table outside and there is a slot in the window to make contactless payments through the glass.

“Our customers have been so supportive, they have rung up to send their best wishes and that, along with family and friends, has really kept us going.

People have been really patient with us and I'd like to thank everyone.”
