FROM THE EDITOR: We have never been followers so let’s still do what we must during the coronavirus crisis

How are we all feeling about there being one rule for those who govern and another for those who are governed?

Sick to the back teeth of it all … not least because all we really want to do is catch up with our own family and hug our nearest and dearest.

Whatever your views on the saga of driving from the capital up north for more than 200 miles in whatever circumstances, I would make one plea.

Don’t take any risks with your own safety or those around you, just because of the necessary noise as the national media hold government to account.

It isn’t worth it.

This city is – largely – made up of sensible folk who do the right thing. You have done that when lockdown was at its strongest and you must keep doing that now.

This isn’t about following in the footsteps of somebody who thinks he is above the rest of us and doesn’t have to keep within the rules.

It is about doing what is right for you and us, regardless of such folk.

We have seen our own Sheffield examples of idiots who seem to think they, and everybody they come into contact with, have superpowers which means the virus doesn’t impact on them.

But, even when magnified by outrage, they are few and far between.

Even when the weather has been utterly gorgeous and the sky perfectly blue, we have followed the rules and stayed home unless absolutely necessary.

There is plenty to have opinions on and the easing of lockdown restrictions is certainly one of them.

We have all got views on it because it is impacting on all our lives in a way we could never have anticipated at the start of the year.

Seeing photos of packed beaches and hearing tales of selfish actions might well make us ask ourselves why on earth we are bothering.

But we aren't doing it for them, we are doing it for every single one of us … most importantly those who are vulnerable.

It is great that we have opinions and fine to be annoyed when we feel we are being wrongly treated but we have all seen the people who suffer when red mist takes over – don’t let that be you.

This won’t last forever but let’s make sure Sheffield keeps doing it right.
