Doncaster coronavirus death toll approaches 200 as UK total nears 40,000

The coronavirus death toll in Doncaster has risen again with three new deaths recorded in the region, bringing the town's total to 183.

Newly released figures by NHS England show the number up by three on yesterday’s total of 180.

The Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has reported 695 cases with more than 300 patients allowed home after treatment.

The total number of confirmed reported deaths in the UK now stands at nearly 40,000 – but it is thought the true figure may be closer to 50,000.

The numbers relate to deaths recorded and reported in the last 24 hours in the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which includes Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Montagu Hospital in Mexborough and Bassetlaw Hospital in Worksop.

Locally, in Sheffield there have been 2,484 cases and 274 deaths, an increase of three on yesterday.

Rotherham has seen 862 cases and 165 deaths, an increase of three while in Barnsley there have been 878 cases and 125 deaths, also an increase of three.

NHS England has announced 143 new deaths of people who tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 26,865.

It means coronavirus fatalities in the UK have risen to at least 39,188.

The latest rise in deaths confirmed by NHS England is bigger than it was yesterday, when 108 more deaths were logged.

However, figures published by the Office for National Statistics today show the true coronavirus death toll is nearer 50,000.
