Mr Jarvis’ comments come after local leaders and health experts in the region entered into talks with Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick about introducing the highest levels of restrictions.

On Monday morning, Mr Jarvis tweeted: “Today local leaders and I will continue talks with @10DowningStreet to make sure #COVID restrictions and proper support go hand in hand.

However, despite some national reports a deal was close, Mr Jarvis confirmed an agreement has yet to be reached on Monday evening.

He tweeted: “Our Council leaders and I stand ready to work with Govt, but they have to offer the support we need to protect lives and livelihoods in South #Yorkshire.

“They haven’t done that yet.”

Talks will continue today.
