In an email to staff, chief executive Alex Baldock said the business will close all UK stores from Tuesday, with the exception of their 145 “contact-free” 3-in-1 Currys PC World storefronts.

He said: “We’re listening to you and your concerns, and we’re responding. lYou haven’t always found it easy in normal trading to keep to the Government instructions of 2 metres safe social distance from other colleagues and customers in stores.

“That’s why we are moving, as of tomorrow, to safe, contact-free storefront trading in 145 Currys PC World stores as well as Online. That will mean a much restricted service to customers, but we will still be helping them.

No-contact deliveries have also been put in place and installation services halted.

Mr Baldock said the company would still pay staff who work in any store affected by closures.
