Covid claims more than 25 lives across South Yorkshire on one of deadiest days yet

Another 11 Covid-19 deaths were recorded at hospitals in Doncaster and Bassetlaw, six in Sheffield, five in Rotherham and four in Barnsley – a total of 26 – in the latest daily toll announced today, Thursday, January 7, by NHS England.

Across England, a further 661 hospital patients who had tested positive for Covid-19 died, taking the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals nationally to 53,730.

Another 79 Covid patients died across the North East & Yorkshire, with the most new deaths recorded in London, where 164 people lost their lives.

Although the deaths were announced today, the date on which people died ranged from December 2, 2020 to January 6, 2021.

Since the pandemic began, there have now been 631 Covid deaths at Sheffield’s hospitals, 598 in Doncaster and Bassetlaw, 446 in Rotherham, and 451 in Barnsley.
