The coronavirus threat level for Sheffield has been raised to RED.

Sheffield Council announced the news earlier following a sustained rise in cases found across the whole region, not just specific areas and postcodes.

Sheffield’s rate of infection as of October 5 is 398 per 100,000 people, putting the city in the top ten of the worst affected places in the country.

Of those tested, 19.3 per cent of people are now testing positive, up from 3.1 per cent last month.

The most common places people are exposed to the virus are thought to be houses, pubs and bars, and people are being advised to avoid staying too long in small spaces with lots of people.

Those with symptoms should get a test, anyone told to self-isolate should do so or face a fine and people should also limit their social contact to the rule of six.

And people are advised to wash their hands regularly, keep their distance from others and wear a face covering when recommended.
