The Times says the company is starting a pilot programme ‘using Amazon logistics’ which would deliver throat swabs that are picked up one hour after a sample is taken.

The results would be delivered by text message, with the whole process taking less than 48 hours, it is claimed.

The paper reported that this COVID-19 test was separate from attempts to create a home test showing antibodies to coronavirus.

Neither the Department of Health and Social Care nor Amazon would confirm the report.

The news comes as doubts are cast on whether the UK can achieve its target of carrying out 100,000 daily tests by the end of April.

Downing Street said on Thursday that the UK now has the capacity to conduct 35,000 coronavirus tests a day but fewer than half that number are being carried out.
