Coronavirus: Shocking video shows extent of panic buying at Doncaster supermarket

The clip, filmed by a shopper at Farm Foods on Wheatley Hall Road, shows aisle after aisle of empty freezer cabinets and shelves, all of them stripped bare by desperate shoppers.

The scenes have been repeated in stores across Doncaster with Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s as well as Aldi and Lidl all with empty shelves.

There have been unprecedented scenes at stores across Britain and in other countries, with long queues developing at checkouts as people stock up ahead of potential lockdowns and social distancing.

Panic buying shoppers have been stockpiling toilet rolls, pasta, tinned vegetables, frozen foods, milk, bread, biscuits, crisps as well as fresh fruit and vegetables as fears about the COVID-19 outbreak grow.

Tesco has said it will now close its 24 hour stores overnight to allow stocks to be replenished while Sainsburys and Iceland are both introducing early morning shopping hours so elderly and more vulnerable shoppers can do their shopping in peace.

Stores are also limiting shoppers to the amount of items they can buy across specific ranges, with signs advising shoppers on which products they will only be allowed to buy a certain amount of.

It comes after the Government announced on Monday that it was stepping up anti-coronavirus measures, urging people to work from home, avoiding using public transport and avoiding bars, pubs, cinemas, restaurants and theatres in a bid to limit the spread of the virus.
