Coronavirus: Sheffield now third 'worst-affected' UK location as confirmed case rate surpasses 700 and death toll reaches 31

Sheffield has become the UK’s third ‘worst-affected’ location in the UK for coronavirus according to new figures published by Public Health England.

The latest figures, which have been provided by PHE as part of its daily update this afternoon (Friday, April 3), show that there are now 715 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Sheffield- up from 113 yesterday.

The city has now overtaken Surrey as the UK location with the most officially confirmed cases- falling behind only Birmingham and Hampshire.

Data for London, which has the highest number of confirmed cases overall, is calculated by each borough.

A total of 31 people who tested positive for the virus in Sheffield have sadly died.

There may only have been just over 600 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Sheffield, but many more people are believed to have contracted the virus.

More than 17,000 people in Sheffield have reported having symptoms of coronavirus, new figures from the NHS show.

This includes 2,116 people who have called 999 and the NHS 111 number, and 15,303 who have reported symptoms online.

Elsewhere in South Yorkshire, there are now 154 confirmed cases in Barnsley, 154 in Rotherham, and 116 in Doncaster.

Across the entirety of the UK, 38,168 have tested positive for COVID-19. A total of 3,605 people who tested positive have died- an increase of 684 in a single day.

Last night, it was announced that a 500-bed field hospital would be built in Harrogate in preparation for the peak of the coronavirus crisis in Yorkshire.
