Coronavirus continues to rip through Sheffield with the case rate jumping by nearly 20 per cent in one day- and another death confirmed.

The confirmed case rate in the city today (Wednesday, April 1) stands at 541- up from 451 yesterday.

One more person has died in hospital in Sheffield after testing positive for coronavirus, according to the figures- bringing the city’s death toll to 21.

Elsewhere in South Yorkshire, there are now 122 confirmed cases in Barnsley, 107 in Rotherham, and 79 in Doncaster.

The latest figure was provided by Public Health England as part of their daily update for each area.

Sheffield is the worst-affected UK location outside of London and the south of England- the current confirmed total is behind only Birmingham, Hampshire and Surrey by upper-tier local authority area.

Data for London, which has the highest number of confirmed cases overall, is calculated by each borough.

Across the whole of the UK, 29,474 have tested positive for COVID-19. A total of 2,352 people who tested positive have sadly died.

Meanwhile, young people have been warned not to underestimate the potential impact of the disease following the death of a 13-year-old boy in Brixton, London.

A drug that could help treat coronavirus is also to be trialled in patients at hospitals across England and Scotland, including Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

The trials of Remdesivir have been fast-tracked and will take place in 15 NHS centres.
