Professor Susan Michie, a member of the Government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) urged the public to resist breaking current lockdown rules so the country is in “a position” to spend the festive period with loved ones.
Sheffield’s mass testing programme could also be used to allow loved ones to be tested and then visit relatives in care homes, according to one of the city’s public health boss.

Hide AdPublic Health consultant Susan Hird, who works for Sheffield City Council, said frontline staff could be among those regularly tested asymptomatically, as well as relatives of care home residents, instead of the population at large.
This targeted approach to testing could ensure loved ones can see their relatives in care homes in time for Christmas.
