Confirmed coronavirus cases up by 80 in 24-hour period in Sheffield

Official figures show that 80 more cases of coronavirus have been recorded in Sheffield.

Public Health England figures reveal 1,020 people had been confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19 by 9am Thursday morning (April 9) in Sheffield, up from 940 the same time on Wednesday. A week before, there were 602 cases.

It means cases have increased by 9 per cent over the last 24 hours, higher than the rate of increase across the UK of 7 per cent.

They were among the 7,061 cases recorded across the North East and Yorkshire, a figure which rose by 560 over the 24-hour period.

A medical expert has labelled the high number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Sheffield “misleading and alarming”.

Across the UK, 65,077 people had tested positive for coronavirus as of 9am on Thursday, up from 60,733 at the same point on Wednesday, Department of Health and Social Care figures show.

In total, 243,421 people had been tested, and, as of 5pm on Wednesday, 7,978 had died.
