ASK Italian is planning to reopen more than half of its UK restaurants in April for outdoor dining, following Boris Johnson’s lockdown roadmap announcement.
The Prime Minister set out the plans for lifting Covid-19 restrictions in England last week (22 February), which will allow restaurants and pubs to serve customers outside from mid-April.
However, progressing along the ‘roadmap’ will depend on four key tests, including the success of the vaccine rollout, evidence of vaccine efficacy, an assessment of new variants, and keeping infection rates below a level that could put unsustainable pressure on the NHS.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has also set out plans for Scotland’s route out of lockdown, with plans to ease measures laid out at intervals of three weeks up until the end of April.
When will restaurants open?
ASK Italian plans to open 41 of its 65 UK branches for outdoor dining only on 12 April.
Several other businesses in England will also be permitted to reopen from this date, including non-essential shops, nail and beauty salons, hairdressers, spas, libraries, outdoor attractions, indoor leisure centres, such as swimming pools and gyms, and self-contained holiday accommodation.
However, the restaurant chain will have to wait another month before reopening for dine-in service, with the government planning to allow this from 17 May if it is safe to do so.
Under the plans, two households or groups of up to six people will be allowed to mix indoors from mid-May.
Much like before, pubs and restaurants will have to offer table service and face masks must be worn by staff and customers when they are not seated.
The government has also scrapped plans to reintroduce the 10pm curfew for hospitality venues, meaning venues won’t have to offer a ‘substantial meal’ to serve alcoholic drinks.
In Scotland, the country will return to a regional system of restrictions by the end of April, with all council areas to be placed in at least Level 3.
This will see Scotland’s economy begin to reopen from 26 April, including shops, bars, restaurants, gyms and hairdressers.
