Nearly 950,000 have applied in the last fortnight, and such is the demand some people are struggling to get the help they need from under-pressure staff.
The Department for Work & Pensions has now released a handy guide to the busiest and quietest times at which to apply online.

Hide AdIt reveals that demand is greatest between 11am and 2pm, when up to 150,000 people are applying online at once, and advises people to try at another time if possible.
The number of users is considerably lower before 8am and after 6pm.
“You may find claiming outside peak times easier, and it will help us ensure claims are processed on time. You can apply for Universal Credit online 24/7,” said the DWP.
“Claimants who are already registered should log onto their online account outside peak times for updates on their claim.”
