17 more South Yorkshire Covid deaths as 1,000 new fatalities across the UK

A total of 17 more coronavirus deaths have been recorded across South Yorkshire, with more than 1,000 new fatalities across the UK.

NHS England said there had been another 1,014 deaths, bringing the national total to 111,264 on Friday.

Locally, there have been another 17 deaths across South Yorkshire, recorded in the 24 hours to 4pm on Thursday, including eight in Sheffield.

The data represents the deaths of hospital patients who had tested positive for Covid-19 in the previous 28 days and whose deaths were recorded in the latest reporting period.

In Sheffield, eight further deaths were recorded, bringing the city's total to 810. Rotherham’s total rose by four to 525.

In Barnsley, five further deaths increased the total to 539, while in Doncaster, the tally remained static at 675.

Since April 28 2020, NHS England and NHS Improvement also started to report the number of patient deaths where there has been no Covid-19 positive test result but it is documented as a direct or underlying cause of death in the death certification process.

The most deaths reported across the country on one day was 1,820 on January 20.

Meanwhile the latest data shows 480,560 more people were vaccinated on Thursday, taking the total number of people given their first jab to 10,971,047.

Some 505,993 have now been given second doses and the seven-day rolling average of first doses given in the UK is 439,980.

Based on the latest figures, an average of 402,895 first doses of vaccine would be needed each day in order to meet the Government's target of 15 million first doses by February 15.
