15 more die of Covid-19 in South Yorkshire

A further 15 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in South Yorkshire hospitals with five recorded in Sheffield.

In Sheffield hospitals, five more Covid-19 patients have died, according to the latest daily statistics. This brings the total deaths to 857.

Figures released by NHS England on February 16 also show that Barnsley recorded six deaths, bringing the total deaths to 565.

In Doncaster, the total deaths have reached 703, with an increase of three deaths.

One patient also succumbed to the deadly virus in Rotherham, as the total figure reached 542 deaths.

Nationally, a further 474 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in hospital in England, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths reported in hospitals to 79,593, NHS England said on Tuesday.

Patients were aged between 26 and 99. All except 17, aged between 38 and 93, had known underlying health conditions.The deaths were between April 1 2020 and February 15 2021, with the majority being on or after February 12.

There were 39 other deaths reported with no positive Covid-19 test result.

The data represents the deaths of hospital patients who had tested positive for Covid-19 in the previous 28 days and whose deaths were recorded in the latest reporting period.

Since April 28 2020, NHS England and NHS Improvement also started to report the number of patient deaths where there has been no Covid-19 positive test result but it is documented as a direct or underlying cause of death in the death certification process.

The number of Covid-19 patients in hospitals in England has also stood at 17,093 as of 8am on Tuesday February 16, according to the latest figures from NHS England – the lowest number since December 20.

This is down 50% from a peak of 34,336 on January 18.

All regions are continuing to see a week-on-week fall in the number of Covid-19 patients.

The figures are: London 3,500 patients (down 23% week-on-week); Midlands 3,466 patients (down 22%); north-west England 2,513 patients (down 19%); north-east England/Yorkshire 2,420 patients (down 19%); south-east

England 2,342 patients (down 22%); eastern England 1,886 patients (down 27%); and south-west England 966 patients (down 29%).
