Sheffield’s coronavirus infection rate has been falling during the lockdown but there are parts of the city where cases have more than doubled.

The weekly Covid infection rate has increased by at least 25 per cent compared with the previous week in 13 neighbourhoods across Sheffield, according to the latest government statistics published yesterday, Sunday, January 24, and covering the period up to Tuesday, January 19.

In five of those areas the number of cases has shot up by at least 100 per cent, while in one it has trebled.

Of the 70 so-called Middle Layer Super Output Areas (MSOA) across Sheffield, 27 recorded a weekly rise in coronavirus cases, two showed no change and 41 recorded a reduction during the latest week

Across Sheffield, during the latest week for which reliable data is available there were 1,405 new cases confirmed, giving a weekly rate of 240.2 per 100,000 people.

That remains considerably below the England-wide rate of 437.8.

These are all the Sheffield neighbourhoods where cases have increased during the latest week by at least 25 per cent.
