Coronavirus: Two more lives lost in South Yorkshire as nine die across England

South Yorkshire has been hit by further coronavirus deaths after nine people died across England in the past day.

Two patients who tested positive for the deadly bug died in Rotherham within a 24 hour reporting period, according to the latest NHS figures.

There have been no other deaths across South Yorkshire within that time, with the latest death in Sheffield recorded on July 16.

It comes after Rotherham was marked as an ‘area of concern’ in Public Health England’s coronavirus weekly surveillance report this week, sparking fears of a local lockdown as seen in West Yorkshire.

Areas of concern are those with the ‘highest prevalence’ of cases and require ‘targeted action’.

Across the country a further nine people who tested positive for Covid-19 have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 29,338.

Patients were aged between 73 and 92 years old. All had known underlying health conditions apart from one.
