The latest data from NHS England released yesterday took the total number of deaths in the city up to 14 after another patient who tested positive for Covid-19 lost their life.

Kirsten Major, Chief Executive, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “Sadly, we can confirm that since March 17th 2020, 14 patients being cared for at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals have died after testing positive for COVID-19. The families of these patients have been informed and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this very difficult time.”

As of yesterday, March 30, the number of people who have died in the UK after contracting the coronavirus has hit 1,408, following 180 more deaths.

Questions have been raised over whether the official coronavirus toll accurately reflects the number of deaths seen in hospitals.

Deputy chief medical officer Dr Jenny Harries said there is a ‘time lag’ in the number of deaths tallied up as officials firm up the numbers and speak to families.

Asked about disparities in figures at a Downing Street press conference, Dr Harries said: “We have to make sure that when we're reporting the family is content and knows and all our data is absolutely accurate.

“There is always a time lag for us to check and evaluate that the data across the system is linked.”
