Coronavirus: Sheffield city centre shops sell out of hand sanitiser as fears grow over virus

Shops in Sheffield city centre have sold out of hand sanitiser with shoppers stocking up to protect themselves against the threat of coronavirus.

Signs have been put up in a number of city centre shops telling customers that hand sanitisers are limited to two per person.

However, on Wednesday afternoon, there was none available in either Superdrug, Boots or Sainsbury’s Local in the city centre as fears over the virus increase.

The stockpiling comes after advice from Public Health England encouraging people to wash their hands regularly and for at least 20 seconds - to prevent catching the virus.

Boots on Fargate and Superdrug on Chapel Walk both had notices on their empty shelves informing shoppers that purchases were limited to two per person.

One elderly customer was turned away by a retailer when they asked if they had any anti-bacterial gel left.

Some retailers had stickers up reassuring the public that more stock is 'on the way'.

The soap aisles were also looking sparse on with a number of popular brands completely sold out.

There are concerns that people have begun stock piling hand washing goods despite the government advising the public against it.

Workers told to self-isolate due to coronavirus will receive sick pay from day one, the Prime Minister has announced, as England's Chief Medical Officer warned that a UK epidemic is now "likely".

Boris Johnson said people who self-isolate are "helping to protect all of us by slowing the spread of the virus" and did not deserve to be penalised financially.
