Coronavirus: Libraries in Sheffield close due to transmission fears and volunteer shortages

A number of council-run and university libraries in Sheffield have closed as coronavirus continues to take its toll on services in the city.

Sheffield City Council announced that a number of libraries in the city would be closing until further notice due to a lack of volunteer availability.The libraries included in the list of closures were: Frecheville, Gleadless, Newfield Green, Totley library, Upperthorpe Library and Stannington Library.

It also said that Greenhil Library will close from Saturday lunchtime.

Meanwhile, the Universitry of Sheffield announced that its libraries would be closing in an effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

A letter to students said: “As part of a shared goal of keeping everyone healthy and safe, and in line with government guidance on social distancing, all library sites will be closed from 9am tomorrow (Wednesday 18 March 2020) until further notice.”

The university also announced that all Varsity sports matches would be cancelled due to coronavirus.
