Former Premier League youngster set to sign as Sheffield Wednesday transfer window hots up

Former Aston Villa winger Andre Green looks set to sign on at Hillsborough on a free transfer having been without a club since his Villains contract ended in the summer.

At just 22, Green is one of the hotter properties on the free agents market and has been linked with the Owls for several months.

A lively, direct winger, he impressed on loan at Charlton last season and has also enjoyed shorter temporary stints at Portsmouth and Preston. Green is a former England youth international and played in 40 league games for Villa.

He adds much-needed depth to a stretched squad that is particularly short in wide areas.

Last week Owls caretaker boss Neil Thompson told The Star last week that he had had ‘brief discussions’ over potential targets with the club’s recruitment team and admitted Wednesday required new faces.

“That’s something we’ll deal with accordingly,” he said.

“It’s like it is with anything in terms of signing payers, it takes time.

“I’ve been head down in the football at this moment in time. I’ve had brief discussions [with Owls recruitment staff], but that’s been about it.”

Should the deal be completed imminently, he joins a disjointed Wednesday camp. Yesterday it was confirmed that their next two Championship fixtures were suspended after they informed the EFL they would be unable to fulfil the fixtures due to a raft of positive coronavirus tests.

It means their next match is scheduled to take place on January 23, an FA Cup fourth round clash at Premier League Everton.
