Young sporting stars recognised for helping promote PE within their school

A group of young sports stars have been recognised for helping to promote and develop physical education within their school.

Deepcar St Johns C of E Junior School is celebrating after receiving the highly commended award in the ‘Outstanding School Sport Crew’ category at the Sheffield Schools Get Active Awards 2020.

It was given to the ‘sports leaders team’ at Deepcar St Johns who showcased the positive effect they have had on their school in terms of decisions made, opportunities for a range of pupils and the development of competition.

Deepcar St Johns sports coach, Ryan Priest, said: “Deepcar St Johns C of E Junior School has over 25 pupils, 15 per cent, of school participating as part of their school sports leaders team.

"They are responsible for running games and sports at lunchtimes ranging from refereeing to coaching athletics, cricket, mini-games and lots of other physically active sessions.

"They have had a significant impact on getting all pupils at Deepcar involved and active in order to meet the government’s target of 60 minutes of moderate exercise every day.”

At the annual awards ceremony in 2020, Deepcar St John’s were also crowned winners of the ‘Upskilling Staff Award’ for their commitment and dedication to upskilling PE staff, while last year the school received the highly commended award in the ‘Active Girls’ category

It also boasts the Gold Schools Games Mark Gold, a national award that recognises the school's commitment to and development of competition, school sport, physical education and physical activity.

Louise Jones, headteacher at Deepcar St Johns and Royd Nursery Infant School, said: “To be recognised in three different fields in two years at the Sheffield Schools Get Active Awards showcases for the quality of education that is provided for the pupils at Deecpar.

"We have an extremely hardworking, dedicated and committed staff that enable pupils to access these superb opportunities. A special thank you must go to Mr Priest who oversees this particular area.

"The pupils take their school sports leaders role very seriously and they are extremely talented at what they do. It provides them with a range of skills such as communication and leadership. There are definitely some PE teachers in the making”.
