Young people '˜tested to their limits' in the Dearne

Painting bridges, developing nature reserves and working with military veterans have been part of 12 weeks of challenges for a group of young adventurers.

The latest 11 graduates of the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Prince’s Trust Team Programme were tested to their limits during some of their assignments. Barnsley College was also involved in the scheme for unemployed 16 to 25 year olds. Participants gain work experience, qualifications and practical skills, and benefit from being part of community projects and a residential week.

All the young people were thrown out of their comfort zones during a week in the Peak District, when painting three unloved railway bridges at Goldthorpe, and on the first embankment nature reserves in the Dearne Valley.

At their graduation at Barnsley Town Hall SYFR programme leader John Daley said; “I am really proud of the group. The young people have experienced a sense of achievement which has inspired them to move forward with new confidence and ambition.”

SYFR Area Manager Steve Helps said: “We have been able to offer participants crucial skills and insights they otherwise may never have experienced. I am truly proud of the role the fire service has played.”

William Wardale, team programme member said; “I have made lots of new friends, new memories and have built many skills. I really enjoyed the experience.”
