Secondary schools will not open properly until September at the earliest, meaning a long summer break for those in Year 7 and above.

But the aim is for some pupils in Years 10 and 12 to have some face-to-face time with teachers from June 15, since they will be sitting their GCSEs and A-levels in the next school year.

Government guidance states: “We are asking secondary schools to offer this face-to-face support to supplement the remote education of year 10 and year 12 pupils.”

A letter to parents sent in light of Public Health advice reads: “Current national guidance is that we should aim to open more widely for some ‘face to face’ provision from 15 June 2020. This does not mean we will be opening to Year 10 or Year 12 in the normal way as we are restricted to the numbers we can have in at any time based on government guidance.

“Arrangements as to how this will work will be communicated by each academy over the next two weeks. It is anticipated that individual one to one sessions will be provided to supplement current remote learning delivery.”

Year 10 and Year 12 pupils are set to begin attending the school for a two hour tutorial session one day a week.

A letter to parents reads: We are very much looking forward to seeing the pupils again, however if any pupil is shielding or in a vulnerable category or if anyone in the household is shielding or vulnerable we do not expect those pupils to return.

“We obviously are doing everything we can to control the risk of infection but, as with everything, we cannot 100% guarantee this and any pupil who is vulnerable should not attend school.

“We have placed all pupils into pods – the pod is the day they will attend school. This will be ¼ of the year group. Within the pod we have split pupils into bubbles of between 5-10 pupils. Pupils will only be with their bubble and will not socialise with pupils in different bubbles.”

Headteacher Sarah Sims said: “During the half term holiday, the DfE published secondary guidance that allows us to invite small numbers of Y10 and Y12 students into school for face-to-face teaching in small groups.

“This would not be ‘business as usual’ in school and is likely to involve students in Y10 and Y12 coming into school for one day per week, with limited social time in small groups. The school day would include longer lessons but fewer of them – to allow students to travel at staggered, less busy times. We are currently working on strict social distancing procedures and risk assessments to ensure the safety of all of our students and staff.

“The earliest this will take place is the week beginning Monday 15 June. However, this is not definite and is dependent on guidance at both local and national level not changing, and us having sufficient staffing levels.

“As ever, student and staff safety is our priority and I will keep parents and students in Year 10 and Year 12 updated with our plans.”

A letter to parents reads: “As parents and carers, I know you will have many questions and concerns about this announcement and about the plans outlined above. As we develop and refine our plans it is important to us that we take onboard the worries, concerns and comments from parents and carers and to ascertain the level of demand in order that we can plan appropriately and provide reassurance where necessary.”

WESTFIELD SCHOOL, ECKINGTON ROAD

In an update to parents, headteacher Joe Birkbeck said: “We are very pleased to confirm that in line with the most up-to-date government advice we plan to begin offering face-to-face teaching to students in Year 10 from Monday 15th June - providing that both the local and national public health advice is that it is safe to do so.

2Current government advice is clear that the provision schools can make for Year 10 students from 15th June cannot amount to a return to normal timetables.

“Instead we have been advised that no more than a quarter of the year group should attend school at any one time, and that strict measures must be put in place to ensure the safety of students and staff.”
