Sarah Sims, head of Silverdale School, said the three people who tested positive had not displayed any symptoms beforehand.

She told The Star: “We are really pleased to have set up routine testing in school, to join all our existing safety measures as another line of defence to keep school open for vulnerable students and key worker children.

"We have tested staff in school and identified three positive, asymptomatic cases that we would otherwise not have been aware of.”

The close contacts of the three people who tested positive have been identified and contacted, Ms Sims added.

Last month the Government announced all staff in secondary schools and colleges will be eligible for weekly rapid coronavirus tests.

Students and staff will also be eligible for daily testing for seven days if they are identified as a close contact of someone who has tested positive.
