Halfway School campaigners have welcomed the news that plans for a crossing on the busy Station Road have been given the green light.

The council confirmed that funding is in place to progress the scheme into the next stages of delivery, with detailed design works and an implementation programme now being drawn up. Councillors are urging the work completed as quickly as possible.

A spokesman said: “Station Road in Halfway is a busy highway, carries a mixture of traffic, including buses, and links the two communities of Mosborough and Halfway. As such, it is used by many parents and pupils to access Halfway Nursery Infant School and local campaigners have raised crossing this road as a potentially dangerous location around the school for a number of years.

“The council has been progressing the project for a long time, however, severe government funding cuts to council transport budgets by the government have put these schemes on hold. Local pupils and parents will be welcoming the news that the Station Road crossing has been prioritised for delivery.

Councillor and Lord Mayor Tony Downing added: “The safety of the road outside the school is something that has been of concern to local parents for a long time. We have been campaigning for a new crossing with the school alongside parents and residents in the area, as well as our MP Clive Betts. It really has been a big community effort to get us where we now and I’d like to work with everyone who has worked with us to deliver for the community.

“With government cuts to our budgets over the past ten years money is tighter than ever and the number of schemes that can be delivered by the council has been reduced drastically. I’m really pleased that the Halfway site has been recognised as a priority area for action.”

Councillor Bob Johnson, cabinet member for transport and development said: “Mosborough Councillor Tony Downing has asked me to visit this site to see first hand the dangers of the road and the importance that action is taken. It’s clear to everyone that something needs to be done. Tony has done a fantastic job campaigning relentlessly for this crossing.”
