Royd Nursery Infant School and Deepcar St John's C of E Junior School were crowned the winner of the ‘Upskilling Staff Award’ for their commitment and dedication to upskilling PE staff within their schools.
The training across the linked schools in line with PE, physical activity, and school sport, has helped both teaching and non-teaching staff develop confidence, as well as improve the standards of lessons, the opportunities for pupils and the attitudes towards PE as a subject area.

Louise Jones, who is headteacher at both Royd Infants and Deepcar Juniors, said she is delighted with the award.
“This is a testament to the staff’s willingness to provide the very best for the pupils that attend our school,” she said.
“The Continuous Professional Development (CPD) model is very well thought out and it is tailored to meet the individual member of staffs needs. The CPD model has proved to be a sustainable model which was the purpose of the introduction of the School Sports Premium funding.
“We have had members of staff other than PE coordinator now deliver PE related staff meetings and we have even had a member of staff produce a video for iMoves that is a national dance scheme to support other schools”.

Hide AdMiss Jones was headteacher at Royd Infants when it received the highly commended award in 2018, and since then has taken over the role at both schools.
In 2019, Deepcar was also commended in the ‘Active Girls’ category, so this year the schools completed a joint submission for the award.
Students each get two hours of PE a week and are given the opportunity to join a wide range of after school clubs which are linked to physical activity.
Children at Royd also participate in the Royd World Cup where children compete against each other in a tournament format, sports days and competitions within the family of schools.
