The vast majority of the course is held outdoors involving practical tasks, with an emphasis on well being and physical fitness, and other essential skills.

Francesca Veal, engagement support officer, said: “Because all our academies are based within army reserve centres, they’re surrounded by people who are in the army or reservists.

“They’re always bringing specialists that can do career talks for the students.”

The open day takes place on Wednesday, June 30 between 10am and 2pm, at Manor Top Army Reserve Centre, Hurlfield Road S12 2AN

The free course lasts six months giving students the opportunity to gain a diploma in pre-uniform services level 1 and 2 .

The academy provides a free uniform, as well as assisted travel costs for students.

“Previous pupils have had a 85 per cent success rate in acceptance into their chosen service,” said Francesca.

The next intake will be in August.
