Sheffielders, it's your final chance for say on future of city education

Coun Abtisam Mohamed, the council cabinet lead on education and skills, said: “We believe that the greatest asset of our city is its people, and the foundation of our ambition to deliver a successful inclusive economy and a great quality of life for the people of Sheffield is our education system.”

In her foreword to the city council document, she stressed the importance of a strong early years strategy, inclusivity in schools and good post-16 education.

The strategy is intended to improve education in the city to create better outcomes for all young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, says the report.

It sets out the key aims to take the city forward to 2030 as:

A clear and transparent improvement model and an underpinning theory of change Inclusivity at the heart of the strategy underpinned by an inclusive system culture built on trust and expertise in meeting the needs of all pupils High quality strategic governance A high quality school workforce.

Areas that require more work, from Covid-19 recovery to SEND education, will all have a separate action plan.

One proposal is to create an education innovation hub to bring together the best ideas and research from the city and beyond.

The report says there are 83,000 children in the city’s schools and nearly half of Sheffield children live in areas classified as among the 20 per cent most deprived nationally.

The number of children requiring a pupil premium to help with disadvantage is rising and stands at 33 per cent.

The report says that attainment for primary school pupils is below the national average but generally above other ‘core cities’ – big regional centres outside London.

It pledges to invest in having the right numbers of staff with appropriate skills.
