Sheffield singer offered choral scholarship to attend Cambridge University

Sheffield choir the Steel City Choristers, a 24-strong group of adult and child singers, had something to celebrate this week after a member of the choir was offered a choral scholarship to one of the country’s top universities.

17-year-old Emma Caroe, who attends the UTC at the Olympic Legacy Park in Attercliffe, has been offered the choral scholarship to attend Cambridge University.

If she achieves her grades, Emma will attend Clare College, which has an international reputation for its university choir, at the university to read mathematics alongside her singing.

Emma sang in Sheffield Cathedral choir from the age of 10 until last summer when the Steel City Choristers were formed.

Emma, who lives in Totley, said: “I was delighted to receive the email and I’m really looking forward to going if I get my grades.”

The Choir of Clare College leads services three times a week in the College chapel and keeps an active schedule recording, broadcasting, and performing.

Former directors have included renowned composers John Rutter and Timothy Brown, and, under the direction of Graham Ross, director of music since 2010, it has been praised for its consistently ‘thrilling’ and ‘outstanding’ performances worldwide.

David Willington, Chair of Steel City Choristers, added: “We are all very proud of Emma.

"It’s been a difficult year but she has persevered and worked hard. Clare College choir is superb, I know she’ll have a wonderful time.”
